Augmented reality used to feel like something only big brands like IKEA or Nike could pull off. Today, adding AR product previews to a Shopify store takes minutes, not months — and it's quickly becoming table stakes for online sellers who want to close the gap between "browsing" and "buying."

If you're running a Shopify store and considering AR for the first time, here's exactly how the process works, from zero to your first live 3D preview.

What You'll Need Before You Start

✅ An active Shopify store with at least one product listed

✅ A few clear photos of the product you want to preview in AR

✅ About 5–10 minutes — no coding or 3D design experience required

Step 1: Connect Your Store

Install an AR/3D visualization app from the Shopify App Store and connect it to your store. This usually takes a single click of authorization — no theme code editing needed.

Step 2: Upload Your Product Photos

Choose the product you want to feature and upload a handful of photos from different angles. The clearer and more complete the photo set, the more accurate the resulting 3D model will be.

Step 3: Generate the 3D Model

This is where the AI does the heavy lifting. Your photos are processed into a full 3D model, typically ready within a few minutes depending on the product's complexity.

Step 4: Activate the AR Preview on Your Product Page

Once your model is ready, activate it and it appears automatically on your product page as an interactive 3D viewer, with a "View in AR" option for anyone on a compatible smartphone.

What Happens After You Go Live

✅ Shoppers can rotate, zoom, and place the product in their own space before buying

✅ Product pages see longer time-on-page and higher engagement

✅ Return rates tend to drop, since customers know exactly what they're getting

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping photo angles is the most common issue — a model built from only 2–3 photos will look noticeably rougher than one built from a full set. Poor lighting in source photos also carries through to the final 3D model, so natural, even lighting is worth the extra minute.

Adding AR to a Shopify store isn't a redesign project anymore — it's closer to installing a plugin. If you want to see it in action before committing to a product, our free plan lets you activate your first AR preview at no cost.
